About Your Gas Meter

Across the AusNet Services network, there are three types of gas meters: domestic, commercial and industrial. One of these meters will be selected based on your appliances, estimated gas usage and the pressure of the natural gas network in your street.

Meter location

Most gas meters are located external to your building, in an area with easy access and adequate ventilation. For commercial and industrial gas meters, you may also require a wire enclosure or bollards to protect from damage or vandalism.

Meter clearance

For safety reasons, your gas meter and/or associated assembly (e.g. regulator and relief valve) must be installed according to minimum clearance requirements. If you’re unsure of these requirements, ask your plumber or gas fitter, as these are strictly enforced.

As a general guide, minimum clearance requirements apply to the position of your meter in relation to opening windows, doors, ignition sources, flammable materials, driveways (or vehicle movement) and other services or utilities.

Meter Installation Registration Number

Once your gas meter is installed, a unique Meter Installation Registration Number (MIRN) is allocated to your property address. Your gas retailer or fitter may then use your MIRN to identify your address, and this number will also appear on your gas bill.
